The brief was to transform a tired garden with minimal planting into a stylish gravel garden for wildlife. The garden was smaller in size so space had to be well utilised. The main request for the garden was for it to be filled with beautiful perennial planting, yet also be able to develop over time with space for the client to add her own plants.
The proposal was to create a gravel garden, full of flowering perennials and a range of habitats to increase the gardens biodiversity. We included mixed planting densities, dry stone walls, log walls, a wildlife pond and rain water harvesting to achieve this.
One of the most interesting features is the reclaimed galvanised water tank which is fed by a rain chain from the garage roof. This then overflows into an area of rain garden planting that is linked to the pond. Another favourite feature of ours is the chunky Oak bench that we made.
Bespoke limestone plank pavers set within the gravel give a contemporary feel to the garden. The horizontal lines and wide path give the illusion that the garden was larger than it actually is. This paving is softened by smaller flowering perennials within the gaps. The stone was also used to retain the log wall, which gave it a clean finish to meet the contemporary yet natural style.
